The Fred Step in its original context, is a series of ballet steps that British choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton once saw the legendary ballerina Anna Pavlova perform. As an homage to the dancer that inspired him so greatly, he included what became known as the Fred Step as a signature in most of his ballets.
Pavlova inspired Ashton and Ashton inspires me. Hence, as a first year PhD student in dance at The Ohio State University, the Fred Step seems like the appropriate beginning for a place to share my thoughts. Sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of the little things that bring us to where we are and so the Fred Step also serves as an important reminder for me personally, to remember what it is about dance that necessitates rigorous study in my life.
Ultimately, I hope to use this place as a space for reflection, clarifying thoughts, and maintain conversations about dance–not just Ashton, I promise!
All the best,
